For my Global history class at school we had an assignment to make a piece reflecting one of the human rights violations we studied in class. I chose the Armenian Genocide. In 1915, the Ottoman Empire was collapsing. The Armenians, being the religious minorities group amongst the empire, became scapegoats. The Young Turks began forcing the Armenians from their homes on April 24, 1915. They forced these innocent people to march from their homes in Armenia to the Syrian desert, giving them little food or water throughout the trip. Thousands died along the way, and those who survived were shot once they reached the Syrian desert. 1.5 million Armenians were killed, meaning that 3/4 of the Armenian population was wiped off the globe. Today, the Turkish government (present day Ottoman Empire) refuses to admit that this ever took place, hence my collage. The lips in the background represent the current Armenian population. The lip shape is filled with photographs of proof that the Armenian Genocide did in fact occur. In the foreground is a hand “shh”ing the lips. This hand is red (the color of the Turkish flag) and is filled with photos of the Turkish denying this brutal event in history. The whole piece represents the current situation between the Turkish and the Armenians. Sooo I thought I’d try and raise awareness by sharing this.
